Philosophical perspectives on technology in today's societies and the role of leadership in enhancing organizations through technology are discussed.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Technology is one aspect of the accelerating change that leaders must deal with. Leadership responsibilities in organizations will increasingly influence, and be influenced by technology. This course is designed to provide a foundation for understanding technology. Change is so rapid, any specific technology you learn about in this course could be obsolete before the end of the semester and will likely be replaced by something newer, faster, and easier to use before you will actually use it. Therefore the focus of the course is not on specific technologies or applications. There is, however, an assumption that since Computer/Internet technology is likely to provide a foundation for some of the near future, everyone needs to have some familiarity with the vocabulary, basic concepts, and current applications associated with it. The goal is to provide everyone with a sufficiently solid foundation that they can then keep up with the technology as it evolves.

The course is intended to reflect upon the content of nearly every other course in the Doctoral Program in Leadership Studies. Technology can impact every discipline, but has special implications for leadership and organizational change. The "Leadership and Technology Project" for this course is designed to allow students to explore the implications of technology in her or his chosen field while making use of technology instead of a traditional paper. Please note that technology does not mean computers.

This syllabus will remain under construction for the duration of the course. . As a class we will make decisions about the contents of the class. You are invited to reflect on what you would like to get out of the course and change the syllabus to ensure these issues are covered. There will be an advanced assignment that will be due the first class session.

Everyone who completes all assignments and actively participates in class and on Google Groups can expect an A. Students who do not complete all the assignments by Session 7, can expect an I until the assignments are done. Note that the I remains on your transcript even after a letter grade has been assigned. Assignment delays due to technology problems are understood and even expected. Timely completion of assignments is critical for both the individual and the other members of the class. Failure to contribute in a timely way to group activities will result in a grade reduction. It is important to keep up. Resources

HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES BY CLASS SESSION

Hands-on activities are generally issues that can be covered in about 20 minutes or less and often are demonstrations of how things looks and work. I have not included topics that look to me as though they cannot be covered in a short time and topics that are already planned for the course. I would like to see us add protecting privacy and civil liberties in the cyber age to our ethics materials.

Possible hands-on activities beased on expressed interest:

state of the art graphics blogs

exploring Adobe Acrobat Meeting Rooms

exploring ways to teach interactive

internet security threats

cyber bullying

electronic medical records

disaster patient tracking innovations

Please provide some detail about your hand-on activity, including links to additional resources as appropriate. Identify the names or the names of the individuals doing the hands-on activity. Given the small size of the class, folks may want to present more than one hands-on activity. This might be covering the topic you indicated you would like to present on and a topic someone else is intetered in. (The understanding is that no one has to be an expert to be willing to try exploring a topic!)

Sept 30

Oct 14

Chuck will present on patient tracking in disaster response. This will also relate to the issue of electronic medical records and broader issues of privacy and civil liberties. As I don't have access to the system used by the government (at least in the classroom), actual patients and C-130 cargo aircraft to load them on, the "hands on" portion may be a little weak. However, I do have briefings and pictures.

The following links provide a bit of a background:

Oct 28

I (Richard) will present on interactive learning environments, including using second life as a learning environment, as well as demoing some of the different serious game engines and their application to leadership. (We did this at the last session (September 29th) so I'll assume I won't cover anything additional, unless someone wants to look at the serious game stuff.

What I will do is give a very brief presentation of how to capture interview data and move it to text without hiring an expensive transciptionist using voice recognition SW.

Nov 4

I (Trish)would like to address the topic of Cyberbullying (my presentation) during this session.

The Ron will present "Twitter" or short message system (SMS), the social network and microblogging service notably popular today.

Nov 18

KidCom by Ellen

Ron will present: Leadership in the electronic storage industry.

Dec 3

Rockin' Ron's brief presentation: Constructing a PowerPoint poster as a tool for presentations in leadership.

Trish is going to come up with some demo?????????

PowerPoint Poster Presentation

PowerPoint poster presentations can be useful in presenting and sharing academic research, grant proposals, official business, strategic plans, etc. Unlike PowerPoint slides, posters are more intimate, allow time for questions and foster more of an individual discussion between the creator and the panel, are less intimidating (due to smaller size of group), allows more time with the audience, and creates potential to showcase the work visually.

I will create a basic PowerPoint Poster and give examples how this technology can be useful in the field of leadership.

PROJECT TOPICS: Revised Thoughts on Technology, Leadership, and the Future Presentations on Dec 3

Select a specific leadership issue that you are involved in. Topic should align with social networking, innovation, and ethical issues of the digital divide. Consider the role of technology is doing the leadership. Demonstrate and/or push some use of technology, create a web presence, and present about it. Identify resources, including skills you have or might want to develop. Let your imagination run wild. Might build upon something else you have done in the course. Post below your topic, links to your technology, links to resources (might be part of a wiki, blog, web page, or even power point presentation. Prepare a 10-15 minute presentation backed up by technology.

Nov 4 - Innovation

Flexbooks and Creative Commons by Ellen Flexbooks are customizable digital textbooks designed to address specific state standards. Teachers or students select the chapters, sections, and /or graphics that teach to specific learning targets. "This project is not about creating more of a digital divide but about providing access to information for all students." Virtually developed and continually evolving. Is this the textbook of the future? Take a look: http://about.ck12.org/

Dec 3

One of the biggest challenges with any sort of qualitative research is presenting the information, making it come alive for the person who we are trying to reach, and giving voice to those who we research. I will be displaying a fairly simple and inexpensive way to use Computer Graphics to animate characters and endow them with voice. This could well be a useful way for engaging in effective ethnodrama. I'll give a brief overview of the ethnodrama subject, then show how an inexpensive program can be used with fairly limited technical ability to created animated presentations including lip synching. The results can be quite realistic and engaging. I may ask for help earlier in recording some voice for this.

Bridging the Digital Divide through Recycling/Reusing Computers: With the stated motto of "Technology for Social Justice," the organzation Infoxchange Australia is "actively involved in grassroots activities aimed at ensuring that all those who wish to access the new technologies can do so irrespective of income, ability or disadvantage" ("About us," 2009).

One of Infoxchange's (link below) initiatives involves refubishing used Australian government and corporate computers otherwise set for costly and environmentally complicated disposal and providing them to economically disadvantaged people and communities.

Here's an explanation of Infoxchange's "Green PC" program, which is the model for my project presentation.

http://www.infoxchange.net.au/sites/www.infoxchange.net.au/files/Green%20PC%20-%20affordable%20computers.pdf

I will present on implementing a similar initiative to bridge the digital divide locally.

While researching my project presentation I found the following organization at Washington State University Department of Governmental Studies and Services dedicated to tackling issues of digital inclusion:

Here is a copy.. Ms. Montgomery's thorough investigations and clear writing style takes Generation Digital to a whole new level. I appreciated her attention to detail and complete analysis of the meaning of being a child in the 21st century. The initial hopes of the World Wide Web were to provide quick access to libraries of information for all individuals; therefore, "bridging the digital divide" (p.5). Along with the benefits came dangers of pornography, violence, and hate in the homes of many children; parents became fearful about the internet. Ms. Montgomery writes a balanced analysis of the trials and tribulations of those who grew up in the digital age...as well as offering insight for those generations to come. -Ellen

My review, also posted to Amazon.com is at: http://www.amazon.com/Leading-Geeks-Manage-Deliver-Technology/product-reviews/0787961485/ref=cm_cr_dp_synop?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending#R1D780S7YZKO71

In posting this review I was a bit disappointed, I had hope to post it on a different, more technical website. The interesting part about this is that books that are interdisciplinary are really in an unknown zone as far as the academic world is concerned. We have siloed ourselves so severely that to try and live in the areas in between is almost impossible. This reinforces an already fractured intellectual world. Bummer.
