Some good initial work this week, class. Thanks. Here are some things we can work on in next week's Chat and Discussion Board.

Philosophical Method

  • Representing the reading in terms and claims: using more precise terms and claims to represent someone's view. "Haidt' view..." vs. "Haidt claims that..."
  • How to Represent Studies
  • Thinking about claims and theory as things that are not just interesting or not, but which can have objective strengths and weaknesses.
  • Observation - Explanation - Theory - Justification - Application

Chat Session Advice:

  • Focus on answering study questions this week. Give yourselves time to answer the questions, but also come to the session with some notes and try to notice where readings address questions. Maybe leave 10 minutes before chat session to look over material.
  • We will move beyond SQs for chats, but let's get better at them first.

Discussion Board Advice:

  • Good start. Posts can be improved in similar ways as chat -- more specific use of terms and claims, attention to arguments.
  • A bit redundant, lots of "weighing in" -- which is fine now. Check Dboard more often to get posts and replies to connect more.
