Class 3: Sept 7, 2010

  • Focus on reflective persona.
-types, other types, recalling reflective experience.
-beyond types, thesholds, attitudes toward conflict
-Building a theory about what makes reflective communication productive.
  • The "normative" side of the Reflective Persona Paper. What should our reflective persona be?
  • Generating ideals from necessary conditions for reflective discussion.
  • Sympathetic Understanding
  • Seeking Knowledge
  • Inviting Appraisal
  • Other Sources for norms: experience, cultural/ethnic attitudes.
  • Group Exercise: Spend a few minutes thinking about friends, relatives and other people in your life who's approach to reflective situations (you might focus on conflictual situations) you admire. You might also recall (to yourself) examples of traits in yours or other's reflective personae that have been unproductive. Then try to describe for each other your ideal reflective partner.
