Final Essays

Topic Assignment

  • For each of your two final essays, please write a two page typed, double spaced, 12 font answer. Your answer should demonstrate excellence in writing, use of content, logic, and insight. The first essay topic is stipulated, but you may choose from a list of three topics for the second one.
  • 1st topic: Give a basic general account of values that should govern our use of animals and plants as food. Then show how these values affect sourcing considerations for at least one type of animal food.
  • 2nd topic: Choose one of the following:
  • A. Select four distinct sources or ideas from the course that you could use to make the case that food culture is a central part of human culture.
  • B. Why did nutrition science take so long to develop and why it is so difficult to reduce a nutritious diet to a list of key macro and micro-nutrients?
  • C. How does the critique of food culture from the Slow Food movement intersect with other critiques of the food industry made in this course?

Assignment Instructions

  • Prepare your essays in a single .docx file or .pdf. Find your animal name for this assignment (see below) and put your animal name in the file. Please identify the essay topic at the start of your answer. The two essays together should not exceed four pages. Upload the file to the "Final Essays" dropbox by midnight, May 9th.
