What is the ITIL V3 Qualification System?

Rumor has it that ITIL V3 is still not entirely working with service management, who knows the ITIL V3 Qualification Scheme and the steady development that happens on it.

A training schedule is a roadmap to achieve a recognized ITIL V3 Certification. Typically this consists of a number of intermediate modules based on and dependent on each other. Together they show the knowledge and skills built into the certification that is obtained.

ITIL V3 Qualification Scheme is somewhat different than the corresponding scheme for ITIL V2. Where V2 after the Foundation had two independent pathways (Practitioner or Manager), one can compose V3 training course relatively freely as needed. However, there are keen rules for earning points in relation to possible module combinations.

Although much of the content is identical in ITIL V3 and V2, the scope of new ITIL qualification scheme, direction and structure of the guidelines evolved significantly. The new schedule takes into account these changes and has therefore become a modular points-based system.

• The level of certification is based on points given for specific exams you pass. To get through each level of certification requires a minimum number of accumulated points. The first level of ITIL V3 certification is called ITIL Foundation. A V3 Foundation gives 2 points.

• The second level is called the "Intermediate". This level is comparable to the level of the practitioner V2. Intermediate has two separate tracks:

A. The 5 Life Cycle Modules (3 points each) are built around the 5 ITIL V3 main books:

A.1 Service Strategy

A.2 Service Design

A.3 Service Transition

A.4 Service Operation

A.5 Continual Service Improvement

The 4 individual Capability Modules (4 points each) are similar to the 4 composite (clustered) Practitioner Modules from ITIL V2, but is broader in scope and tailored to the new content of ITIL V3. The modules are:

- Operational Support & Analysis (OSA)

- Planning, Protection & Optimization (PPO)

- Release, Control & Validation (RCV)

- Service Offerings & Agreements (SOA).

• The third level is called "ITIL Expert" and is achieved when 22 points are achieved. Foundation and Managing Across the Lifcycle (5 points) are mandatory, while they can be selected relatively freely between the Lifecycle and Capability modules to achieve the final 15 points. You start with the Foundation and conclude with Managing Across the Lifcycle.

• A fourth level, called "ITIL Master", is Beta pilot test and not yet publicly available. This is expected to happen later in 2011. Exams are built around Bloom's levels of learning. The ITIL V3 Qualification Scheme for ITIL V3 Certification is an all multiple choice exam in several different forms.
