Directions: Answer the following three questions in two paragraphs each. Do not put your name on the document (you may put your student id if you wish). When you are finished upload your file to the midterm drop box on courses.alfino.org. Save a copy. If you hand write your exam, please type it up within a day and submit it. Then give me the handwritten copy at our next class.

1. What does Haidt mean by saying happiness is "in the journey"? Evaluate the view in light of your study of happiness.

2. What does it mean to say that our brains have automatic and controlled processes? What are some implications for the nature of happiness?

3. What is Epicurus' theory of desire and pleasure? Briefly evaluate it.
